This traditional cottage in the wilds above Foxdale on the Isle of Man provides a warm welcoming and snug traditional home with all of the benefits of contemporary modern living. The clients benefit from several acres of land for horses and other animals looking down upon the Irish Sea in this bucolic setting. Our brief was to restore a Manx ‘Tholtan’ in which local sheep had been living for decades. The walls are made from locally quarried Manx Stone a locally sourced slate, with a long since fallen slate roof.

We set out to provide the primary new accommodation to the rear including a large Kitchen Living Dining open plan space , this formed a T shape to the original cottage. We made the newer section out of different materials including oak framing and timber cladding giving it a distinctive newer look than the old cottage, we also felt it was important for the newer section to be subservient to the original, thereby raising the importance of the original Tholtan.

The smaller cottage housed two bedrooms at first floor, at ground level a snug with hearty stove, a new home office to the opposite side and centrally located stair. The master bedroom and en-suite are located at the rear with a dramatic floor to ceiling glazed oak framed window with a large vaulted ceiling and sizable oak framed truss as the bedroom centrepiece. This dramatic window looks North towards the hills and the thick forest of Stony Mountain plantation and South Barrule with its ancient Celtic hillfort.

The home is warm through the winter months with its small yet cozy front snug, and able to be opened up during the summer months to a Patio facing East towards the sea and morning sun.
